Unsung Hero: Martin Luther King Jr

 Martin Luther King Jr

Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential members of the Civil Rights movement. He gave the “I Have A Dream” speech, which is one of the most famous speeches ever. His legacy lives on today, and he even had a holiday named after him.

Martin Luther King Jr. was discriminated against for his entire life, just because he was African-American.  His father was one of the earliest Civil Rights activists. He wanted to fight back against this unfair treatment. He dedicated his life to stopping segregation. He took the risks of protesting because he didn’t like being discriminated against.

Martin Luther King Jr wanted segregation and discrimination to not be allowed. African-Americans weren’t treated the same way as white people, just because of the color of their skin. He caused the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to be passed by Lyndon B. Johnson. He used peaceful protests to cause the U.S to stop segregation.

Martin Luther King Jr. helped end segregation. He was killed marching in a peaceful protest on April 4, 1968. His death inspired people to keep fighting against segregation. He is an Unsung Hero because even though everyone knows who he is, they don’t know much about him. He was one of the most prominent figures in the Civil Rights movement.

Martin Luther King Jr was one of the most influential and prominent figures of the Civil Rights movement. He stopped things that were wrong with peace, and dedicated his life to stop segregation and discrimination. His legacy will live on forever.

The Pros and Cons of Dogs

 Owning a Dog

Pros

To start, dogs can be great company. They love to cuddle and will always be loyal to you. They are also very cute, and wear most clothes you put on them. Also, they are very good companions for kids, as the article “11 Pros and Cons to Owning a Dog” says. “If raised right, every dog can grow up to be kid-friendly. Lastly, they love to play. If you like to exercise, dogs will be great for you.

                                          Cons

Dogs need lots of training to be obedient. If you can’t get your dog to do basic commands like “sit” and “stay”, then you’re in big trouble. Also, dogs need to be potty trained as soon as possible. Next, they also are very expensive.  You want to get a pair of new shoes? Well, your dog needs shots. Guess you can’t buy them! Third, dogs need lots of exercise. If you have to work all day, then they can’t really get the exercise they need.

So, overall, dogs can be great pets to have as companions, and they’ll love you all the time, but they need lots of training, exercise, and money if you want a happy pup. So if you’re considering getting a dog, be sure to think of the pros and cons.

The Effect of Covid on Everyday Life

 The Effects of Covid

By Kieran Kilmer

The Coronavirus, or COVID-19 pandemic, has, as the article “Effects of COVID-19 pandemic in daily life”, says “COVID-19 has rapidly affected our day-to-day life,”. People have had to quarantine, which is staying in their house, waiting for two weeks until they are cleared of having COVID. The entire process is boring, and seems to take forever.

In March of 2020, there was a country-wide panic when the whole country shut down, but now it’s just everyday life. One of the places that changed the most is schools. Now most schools are hybrid, which means they have some kids one part of the week, and the other kids the other half. Some other schools are full-remote, and nobody goes to school. And there are also some schools where kids go into the school every day.

People have learned how to keep themselves safe. Whenever people go out, they have to wear masks to keep others safe. Masks are used to keep you from giving other people COVID, not to keep people from giving it to you. People have been able to make businesses just from selling masks to keep people safe. Masks are now one of the most important things of everyday life.

There are a couple of really good things that came from this pandemic. Almost everybody who needed to have school learned how to use Google and all of its apps  and meeting platforms like Zoom and  Google Meet.  Also, everybody was able to have more family time because they were stuck at home. So, the pandemic hasn’t been all bad, it helped a lot of people learn new things.

The History of Baseball

The History of Baseball

Origin

Crack! The ball flies way, way back. It's a home run! America's favorite sport, baseball, has just decided a winner of the World Series, one of the biggest sporting events in the world. But who invented this world-famous sport? Baseball has never really been invented, it's just a combination of two other games, one of which was called rounders, which was brought to America by the early settlers, and the other was cricket, both from as early as the 18th century. During the American Revolution, variations of early baseball were being played throughout the 13 colonies. Also, according to the website History, baseball became much more popular in the mid-19th century when industrialized cities were growing bigger.

Best in Their League

If you've ever even heard about baseball, you probably have heard about at least one of these guys. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Ted Williams are just some examples. Ted Williams was considered the greatest hitter of all time. He served in the Korean War, and was a nineteen-time All-Star. Babe Ruth is considered the greatest baseball player ever. He was one of the first five inductees into the Hall of Fame, and he has the record for highest slugging percentage (.690) ever. Lou Gehrig was the first player to have his number retired by a team (4). He was elected into the Hall of Fame, and he set the record for most consecutive games played without a break (It's since been broken by Cal Ripken Jr.). They were some of the best baseball players ever, but there are more who have been just as good as these players.

Teams and Stadiums

Right now there are 30 MLB teams, and every team has their own stadium. The Yankees have Yankee Stadium, the Athletics have the Oakland Coliseum, the Giants have Oracle Park, and there are so many more. The Yankees are possibly the most well-known team in the MLB. They have 27 World Series titles, and some of the best players ever, like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Joe Dimaggio. The Red Sox, basically the Yankees' archrivals, have the oldest active ballpark in the league. The Red Sox also had to endure the "Curse of the Bambino" after they traded away Babe Ruth to the Yankees. After 1918, they couldn't win another World Series for 86 years. Finally they broke the curse after sweeping the Cardinals in four games. But the Mariners might have it even worse. They haven't even made the playoffs in 19 years! That was just a quick overview of all the teams, but every team has its share of interesting facts and great players.

Overview

Baseball is known as "America's Game", the national pastime of the United States. It has lots of teams in stiff competition with each other, home-field-advantage sometimes deciding the game, an interesting backstory, and dozens of legends like Jackie Robinson that shaped the game. Baseball truly lives up to its name of America's Game, the favorite sport in the U.S.
